Idaho Pasture Pigs Heritage Pasture Raised Pork We chose to raise Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs) because of their friendly temperament and manageable mid-size, making them ideal for our small family ranch. Unlike other breeds, IPPs have an upturned nose, which means they don't root as much, preventing the creation of holes that could be hazardous to our other animals. IPPs are prized for their marbled, redder-than-usual meat, which often has a higher nutritional value than the typical pink pork found in grocery stores. This was a key factor for us, as we prioritize not only the humane raising of our animals but also the health benefits of nutrient-rich foods, especially given our family's own health needs. Our IPPs' diet consists mainly of pasture and alfalfa, with a small amount of grain hand-fed daily to provide essential minerals and nutrients. Unlike most commercial and some other pasture-raised breeds, which reach market weight in 5-6 months due to free access to grain, IPPs take 10-12 months to grow out. This longer process requires more work and patience, but the superior quality of life for our pigs and the exceptional meat they provide make it all worthwhile.
